Expand your psychology skill set and develop the skills necessary to become a doctor-level clinical psychologist in our American Psychological Association-accredited Re-Specialization Certificate in Clinical Psychology. Designed for individuals who have a Ph.D. in another area of psychology but want to re-specialize in clinical psychology and pursue professional licensure, our certificate program blends classroom learning and clinical training with unique hands-on clinical experiences across Chicago, ranging from opportunities to work in community mental health clinics, academic medical centers, and United States Veteran Affairs medical centers.

Program Overview

One of the few re-specialization programs in the Midwest, our Re-Specialization Certificate in Clinical Psychology is aligned with our existing Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology to meet licensure standards in 91ÖÆÆ¬³§, offering the same clinical courses and training that full Ph.D. students receive. You will explore topics such as psychopathology, therapy, assessment, and professional ethics, as well as receive clinical training at sites throughout Chicago.

Here are some courses that are among our students’ favorites:

PSYC 509 Ethics and Professional Issues II: This course explores topics including dissertation research, internship experience, early job and career decisions, supervision, and consultation. Barriers to the successful completion of the program are discussed, and solutions are discussed for any potential roadblocks. 

PSYC 506 Therapy I: You’ll explore basic clinical skills including intake, suicide assessment, case formulation, differential diagnosis, and basics of conducting cognitive behavioral therapy.  

PSYC 533 Clinical Practicum: This course explores clinical assessment, therapy, and/or consultation in a community-based mental health setting or medical facility for an average of 15 to 20 hours per week, per semester. You’ll obtain supervised experience in the provision of psychological services and related professional activities.

Please note: This program is designed to be consistent with American Psychology Association accreditation guidelines, and requirements for licensure usually are similar to APA accreditation guidelines. However, re-specialization students may not have had all of the non-clinical coursework required for licensure in their prior doctoral programs, and students are responsible for consulting with individual state licensing boards to make sure their prior education and degree are license-eligible in combination with this certificate.
