Alessandro Talamelli, coordinator of the master鈥檚 program in nautical engineering at University of Bologna

The Department of Mechanical, Materials, and Aerospace Engineering welcomes Alessandro Talamelli, coordinator of the master鈥檚 program in nautical engineering at University of Bologna, Italy, who will present, 鈥淭en Years of Activities of CICLoPEInfrastructure: Lessons Learnt and Future Directions鈥 on Friday, June 13, from 11 a.m.鈥搉oon in room 241 of the Rettaliata Engineering Center.

Abstract

This presentation outlines the development, achievements, and future trajectory of the CICLoPE (Centre for International Cooperation in Long Pipe Experiments) infrastructure, conceived to address fundamental challenges in the study of wall-bounded turbulence at high Reynolds numbers. Central to CICLoPE is the Long Pipe facility, a uniquely long and meticulously controlled experimental apparatus designed to provide high-resolution data for canonical turbulent pipe flows. Over its first decade of operation, CICLoPE has enabled a series of landmark investigations into turbulent flow structure, scaling laws, and advanced diagnostic methodologies, contributing valuable experimental benchmarks to complement numerical and theoretical studies. The talk will critically assess key findings and methodological insights gained, as well as their implications for turbulence modeling and simulation validation. Finally, current developments under the CICLoPE initiative will be presented, including facility upgrades, ongoing research projects, and collaborative opportunities aimed at expanding the facility鈥檚 role within the international turbulence research community.

Biography

Alessandro Talamelli graduated in aeronautical engineering at the University of Pisa. In 1994 he obtained his Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering at the Politecnico di Milano. In 1995 he became a researcher at the University of Pisa. In 2016 he became full professor of aerodynamics at the University of Bologna, and was the director of the Interdepartmental Center for Aerospace Industrial Research until 2019. He is the Coordinator of the CICLoPE project (Center for International Cooperation in Long Pipe Experiments) in Predappio, Italy, where he realized a large infrastructure for the turbulence studies and for which in 2016, he received honorary citizenship. Since 2003 he has been a guest professor at the Royal Institute of Technology Stockholm. Presently he is coordinator of the master鈥檚 program in nautical engineering at University of Bologna, and editor of Experimental Thermal and Fluid Science (Elsevier). He has authored more than 130 publications in journals and international conference proceedings. Talamelli is a passionate triathlete, Ironman in Kalmar, 2016 and Cervia (Italy) in 2017 and 2019.
