A grading scheme in Canvas is a set of rules that turns students’ overall scores into letter grades (like A, B, C, D, or F). It helps students understand what score they need to earn each letter grade and ensures grades are shown consistently across the course. Instructors can view the default grading scheme or customize it to match their own grading policy.
To view your course Grading Scheme:
- Open your course in Canvas.
- Go to “Settings” on the left-side menu.
- In the Course Details tab, scroll down to the Grading Scheme section.
- Ensure the “Enable course grading scheme” checkbox is selected.
- Click the “View” button to view the Default Grading Scheme.
Notes
- The default grading scheme is applied to your course only and can be changed or customized in the Manage Grading Schemes section.
- Although letter grades are displayed, the underlying calculations in Canvas are based on percentages.
- If you create or modify a custom grading scheme, it will be saved at the course level and carried over when copying the course.
